Part of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, this project was recognized with a 2016 California Preservation Foundation Design Award.

San Francisco Opera’s Diane B. Wilsey Center for Opera is an exquisitely renovated 38,000 sf complex on the fourth floor of the San Francisco War Memorial Veterans Building, a Beaux Arts landmark.

The complex features the Taube Atrium Theater, a flexible space with 299 modular seats and impressive acoustics by Meyer Sound; an education studio and rehearsal venue; the Norby Anderson Costume Studio, a 10,000 sf shop complete with dyeing vats; public archives for the Opera; the Hume Family Gallery and the David Gockley Gallery; and administrative offices.

In addition to strengthening existing elements and providing structural framing, Tipping designed multiple systems to support rigging loads, custom structural mullions and lateral bracing for window walls, and a custom double-ring catwalk comprising a square outer walk with chamfered corners and an inner ring.
