Crystal Springs Uplands School is an independent, coeducational, college prepreparatory day school. With stunning views of the San Francisco Bay, Belmont Canyon, and Waterdog Lake, this new campus (5.7 miles southeast of the original Hillsborough campus) serving grades 6 through 12 boasts three buildings: the Academic Center, the Tony Komsan Gymnasium, and a multipurpose building that includes a café, performance and practice spaces, a dining terrace, and servery. The campus also accommodates an outdoor sports court, regulation turf field, and science court.

Tight budget constraints necessitated our working very closely with the architect and builder to investigate different building types and lateral systems for the gymnasium and café buildings. We provided separate pricing schematics for each building type (structural steel, concrete tilt-up, and CMU) under consideration to determine the most cost-effective structural solution to meet programmatic requirements.

This collaborative design approach continued throughout the project; for example, detailing concepts were coordinated with the contractor to produce final construction documents.
