This $14.2 million project received the 2012 Best K-12 Education Award from Engineering News Record, California edition.

Phase II of a multiphase master plan for Junipero Serra High School, this 25,000 sf project involves a new two-story building to replace outdated and inadequate facilities, as well as to house unique programs for art, music, and the sciences.

The new construction accommodates a large and acoustically sophisticated music classroom on the ground floor; five cutting-edge science labs for biology, chemistry, and physics; an acoustically designed orchestral and rehearsal hall; two state-of-the-art recording studios; and a performing arts green room. Sliding doors allow art-studio classrooms on the ground floor to open up to the Fine Arts Courtyard.

The aquatics building boasts a 550,000-gallon, 38-meter competition-level pool for swimming and water polo; lockers for the swim team, as well as spaces for pool equipment; and a 900-square-foot athletic training room.

The building is constructed of concrete and supported on drilled, cast-in-place concrete piers; green concrete was specified to help meet sustainability goals.
